Installation Instructions

Overview

These instructions guide you through the proper installation of the BCW Muzzle Brake, ensuring correct timing and secure attachment to your firearm. The muzzle brake requires shims for proper orientation, Rocksett for thread locking, and a maximum torque of 30 ft-lbs to prevent damage to the barrel or device.

Tools and Materials Required

  • Bench vise with upper receiver vise block or barrel clamp
  • Armorer’s wrench or appropriate wrench for the muzzle brake
  • Torque wrench capable of 25–30 ft-lbs
  • Shims (included with the BCW Muzzle Brake)
  • Rocksett (included or high-temperature thread locker)
  • Degreaser (e.g., acetone, alcohol, or non-chlorinated brake cleaner)
  • Clean rags, cotton swabs, or toothbrush for thread cleaning
  • Optional: Alignment rod for suppressor use

Safety Precautions

  • Ensure the firearm is unloaded and safe before starting.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area when using degreasers or Rocksett.
  • Avoid over-torquing, as this can damage the barrel threads or muzzle device.
  • Do not use crush washers, as they may cause misalignment, especially with suppressors.

Installation Steps

  1. Secure the Firearm
    • Mount the barreled upper receiver or barrel securely in a bench vise using an upper receiver vise block or barrel clamp to prevent movement during installation.
  2. Clean the Threads
    • Degrease the barrel and muzzle brake threads thoroughly using acetone, alcohol, or non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
    • Use clean rags, cotton swabs, or a toothbrush to remove oil, carbon, or debris.
    • If threads are heavily fouled, consider using a tap and die set to chase the threads.
  3. Test-Fit and Time the Muzzle Brake
    • Thread the muzzle brake onto the barrel by hand without shims until it stops against the barrel shoulder.
    • Check the orientation of the ports. The ports should be oriented toward the 12 o’clock position (top) when fully installed, as shown in the Main ( Default ) product image.
    • If the ports are not aligned, remove the muzzle brake and add shims from the provided kit between the barrel shoulder and the muzzle brake.
    • Stack shims until the muzzle brake, when hand-tight, stops approximately 10–45 degrees before the 12 o’clock position. This allows for proper alignment when torqued.
  4. Apply Rocksett
    • Once the correct shim stack is determined, remove the muzzle brake.
    • Ensure threads are clean and dry.
    • Apply 2–3 drops of Rocksett to the barrel threads at the 12 o’clock position. Avoid over-application, as excess Rocksett can harden unevenly.
  5. Install the Muzzle Brake
    • Place the selected shim stack onto the barrel threads, ensuring they sit flat against the barrel shoulder.
    • Thread the muzzle brake onto the barrel by hand until it contacts the shims.
    • Using an armorer’s wrench or appropriate tool, torque the muzzle brake to 25–30 ft-lbs using a torque wrench. Ensure the ports are aligned at the 12 o’clock position (±3 degrees).
    • Do not exceed 30 ft-lbs to avoid damaging the barrel threads or muzzle brake.
  6. Verify Alignment
    • Visually inspect the muzzle brake to ensure the ports are horizontal and oriented at 12 o’clock.
    • If using a suppressor, use an alignment rod to confirm concentricity with the barrel bore to prevent baffle or endcap strikes.
    • If alignment is off, remove the muzzle brake, clean the threads, adjust the shim stack, and repeat steps 4–5.
  7. Cure the Rocksett
    • Allow the Rocksett to cure for 24 hours to ensure a secure bond.
    • Do not fire the firearm or disturb the muzzle brake during this time.

Additional Notes

  • Shims vs. Crush Washers: Always use shims for timing the BCW Muzzle Brake. Crush washers are not recommended, as they may cause misalignment, especially when used with suppressors.
  • Rocksett Removal: If removal is needed, soak the muzzle brake in water for several hours to weaken the Rocksett, then use an appropriate wrench to unscrew the device.
  • Suppressor Use: Ensure precise alignment when using the muzzle brake as a suppressor mount to avoid damage to the suppressor or firearm.
  • Torque Accuracy: Use a crow’s foot wrench with the torque wrench set at 90 degrees to the wrench flats to minimize torque variation. If no torque wrench is available, tighten firmly but avoid excessive force.

Warnings

  • Over-torquing beyond 30 ft-lbs can stretch or damage barrel threads, affecting accuracy or suppressor performance.
  • Failure to properly time the muzzle brake may reduce its effectiveness in managing recoil and muzzle rise.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s torque specifications and use Rocksett to prevent the muzzle brake from loosening during use.
